Life is dynamic, and as it evolves, so should your NDIS plan. That’s why periodic reviews, now referred to as NDIS Plan Reassessments or Plan Variations, are essential to ensure that your support aligns with your current needs and goals. In this guide, we’ll explore the difference between reassessments and variations, and offer tips on how to make the most of the process.


Understanding NDIS Plan Reassessments and Variations


NDIS Plan Reassessment:

Formerly known as an NDIS Plan Review, a reassessment is a comprehensive examination of your plan. It can occur either at a scheduled time (typically 12-36 months after your initial plan) or unscheduled, at your request. This thorough evaluation allows for adjustments to better reflect changes in your circumstances.


NDIS Plan Variation:

A variation, often termed a ‘light touch’ plan review, involves minor adjustments to your plan. These changes may include altering reassessment dates, adjusting funding structures, changing service providers, or modifying how support is delivered. It provides a more flexible approach for participants who do not require a full reassessment.


Tips for a Successful NDIS Plan Reassessment


Step 1: Reflect on Your Current Plan:

Evaluate your current plan’s effectiveness by considering what worked well, which goals you achieved, and areas that may need improvement. This self-reflection lays the groundwork for discussing necessary adjustments.


Step 2: Communicate with Your Support Network:

Engage with your support coordinator and service providers. Share information about your reassessment and ask for an ‘end-of-plan progress report’ detailing the support you received, goal achievements, challenges faced, and any recommendations for additional supports.


Step 3: Consider Future Goals:

Use the reassessment as an opportunity to envision your future. Decide which goals to continue pursuing, consider new aspirations, and anticipate any life changes such as transitions, relocations, or career shifts. Collaborate with your support coordinator for insights on potential supports you may need.


Step 4: Evaluate Plan Management:

Assess how your plan is currently managed and consider if any adjustments are needed. Explore options such as plan management, self-management, or NDIA management. Discuss these preferences during your reassessment to ensure your funding aligns with your chosen management style.


Step 5: Determine Plan Duration:

You have the option to request a plan duration of up to three years. If you foresee minimal changes in your situation and are confident in utilising your funding to pursue your goals, discuss the possibility of a longer plan length with your NDIA planner.
