Level 3 Specialist Support Coordination

NDIS specialist support coordination is a higher level of support designed to assist participants with complex needs and streamline the coordination of their NDIS plan.
It aims to reduce barriers to accessing their NDIS plan, ensuring a more effective and efficient support network.

What is Specialist Support Coordination?

Level 3 specialist support coordination helps participants navigate challenges related to the implementation of their NDIS plan.

Specialist Support Coordinators Assist With:

  • Identifying and addressing complex barriers that may affect their access to required supports.
  • Developing tailored service plans that align with the participant’s individual needs and goals, where appropriate. This service ensures participants receive the necessary assistance to manage and optimise their support arrangements, ultimately improving outcomes in their daily lives.

The Difference Between the Three Levels of Support Coordination

Understanding the difference between the levels of support coordination is crucial. Your NDIS plan may include one or more of three levels of support coordination.

Level 1 NDIS Support Connection: Entry level support coordination that helps you connect with services and resources that enable you to live independently.

Level 2 NDIS Coordination of Supports: This level of support coordination helps you build the skills to navigate your NDIS plan effectively. Your NDIS support coordinator will guide you in accessing a mix of services to build skills, manage your care, live independently, and stay connected in your community.

Level 3 Specialist NDIS Support Coordination: This higher level of support coordination is designed to help participants address complex barriers that affect access to supports. A Specialist NDIS Support Coordinator will assist in managing challenges and developing a service plan for support needs (where appropriate).

Resources and More Information

How does NDIS support coordination get included in a plan?

Where reasonable and necessary, NDIS support coordination will be included in the Capacity Building budget. This is a fixed amount for a support coordinator to help you use your plan.

You can only purchase the level of NDIS support coordination that is funded in your plan.

Find out more via the NDIS website.

What is the difference between a Support Coordinator and a Specialist Support Coordinator?

While both roles help you link with and manage services, Specialist Support Coordination (Level 3) is designed to address more complex needs or higher-risk situations. A Specialist Support Coordinator will work with you to assess, identify and implement strategies that reduce risks, handle crises and support you in achieving your goals.

You may have both Support Coordination and Specialist Support Coordination funded in your NDIS plan, or you might only have Specialist Support Coordination, depending on your individual needs.

If I have Level 3 specialist support coordination, does that mean I will receive funding for Level 3 very high intensity supports?

Having specialist support coordination (Level 3) does not inherently mean you will be allocated or require very high intensity (Level 3) supports such as complex personal care.
A participant might have complex psychosocial or service coordination needs (justifying specialist support coordination) but still only require standard or moderate personal care supports (Level 1 or 2).
All your supports will be outlined in your NDIS plan. If you have any questions about your plan, please contact NDIS directly.

What is the difference between Plan Management and Support Coordination?

Plan management helps with the financial administration of your NDIS plan, which is available to all participants. NDIS support coordination focuses on supports and providers, which is only available to those who meet the reasonable and necessary criteria determined by the NDIS.
