Self-Managed vs Plan-Managed vs Provider-Managed NDIS | Carer's Network

Getting your first NDIS plan is a big moment. But along with the funding comes a new list of terms to learn, “Self-managed,” “plan-managed” and “provider-managed” are often right at the top of that list.

You might know your funding is there. You might even know roughly what it’s for. But how it’s actually managed, and what that means for the provider you can choose, the paperwork you’ll deal with, and how much control you have day to day; that’s where things can feel confusing.

Here’s the good news: there’s no right or wrong choice. Each option simply offers a different balance of flexibility and support. At Carer’s Network, it’s a question we get asked often. So, let’s break it down.

1: Self-Managed

This option puts you fully in the driver’s seat. You pay providers directly, keep your own records, and claim reimbursements from the National Disability Insurance Agency (NDIA.) It offers the most flexibility of all. Including access to unregistered providers and more room to negotiate directly with the people who support you. It does mean taking on more responsibility for records, receipts and budgeting.

This might suit you if: you want maximum flexibility and choice, and you feel confident taking on the extra admin that comes with it.

2: Plan-Managed

Think of this as a helping hand with the admin. A plan manager (funded separately in your plan) pays your invoices and keeps track of your budget for you. The big difference? You can use registered and unregistered providers. This means you have more choice, without having to do the bookkeeping yourself. You’ll still get regular statements, so you always know where you stand.

This might suit you if: you want more provider options but would rather not manage the finances yourself.

3. Provider-Managed

This is the simplest option, and the one you’ll have unless you ask for something different. The NDIA pays your providers directly, so there’s very little paperwork on your end. You can check what’s been spent through the myplace portal at any time. The trade-off is choice. You can only use providers registered with the NDIS Quality and Safeguards Commission.

This might suit you if: you want things kept simple, and you’re happy choosing from registered providers.

Can you mix them?

Yes, and a lot of people do. It’s common to self-manage one part of a plan while leaving another part NDIA-managed, or to use a plan manager for some supports and manage others yourself. You can set your plan up this way from the start or change it at your next review.

You’re not locked in

Whichever option feels right now, it isn’t permanent. As your needs change, your plan management style can change too. You can always check in at your next plan review, or sooner if your circumstances shift.
